The Importance of Board Certification
What does board certification mean, and why is it important? In the United States, a board-certified physician must successfully complete supervised, in-practice training. They spend several years pursuing their specialization post-medical school. All specialty boards require the successful undertaking of both a written and an oral exam. These exams assess medical knowledge and clinical judgment. Once certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), the oral surgeon must participate in the Certification Maintenance process.
